The Various Dining Etiquette Tips

By Teri Farley

Good table manners is a component of decent eating habits that cannot be ignored. In the daily life of an individual, this aspect comes in handy as it has to be used. People that know how to act at a dinner table have it very easy when they are guests. If they were hosts, it becomes very enjoyable as their hosts are bound to feel very much at home. Dining etiquette tips are basic practices that are bound to stick with continued practice. Such practice begins at home.

Excusing oneself is very essential. Whether one is going to the washroom or to answer a phone call, they do not have to say where they are going. A simple excuse me would suffice. That however does not mean there is always no need to give a simple explanation. Your guests or even the host would feel better knowing you are okay and are just leaving briefly. Either way, leaving without a word is a sign of rudeness.

Having the right posture during dinner cannot be ignored. Depending on the posture assumed, how comfortable one is can be deduced. However tense one is or even if they are new to the place, sitting stiff must be avoided. Hunching shoulders over the plate like one is using a shovel ought to be avoided. Similarly, slouching back on the seat is not advisable. It may be an indication that one is hardly interested in those they are with, or even with the food offered. The posture assumed should be relaxed and comfortable.

It normally is purely normal for someone to want a second helping during a dinner. This is only recommended in informal set ups. In formal dinners, there may not be provision for that. Normally, the host or hostess may offer to serve the second helping, or encourage guests to do it on their own. Either way, the guest should know when it is necessary and appropriate to ask for second helping.

Interestingly, one may find food that they have never eaten before during a dinner, thus not be in a position to eat it effectively. There are three things they can do. Sit back and wait for someone to start eating before beginning to eat is one option. On the other hand, there is the option of asking someone how the food is eaten. As a last resort, the given food may be avoided altogether.

Eating quietly is polite. The whole essence of table manners is unobtrusiveness. Any noise is bound to interfere with conversation. Scraping plates or loud chewing are practices that must be avoided. The conversation should be such that one considers the food in their mouth, lest it splash all over and spoil the fun.

Sneezing, coughing, yawning or blowing ones nose are natural and cannot be avoided, at least most of the time. The mouth or nose should be covered at such instances using a napkin. The napkin ought not be used to blow the nose, unless of course it is an emergency.

As part of dining etiquette tips, the completion of a meal cannot go without both gratitude and complements. Gratitude is done whether one accepts the offer or not. After the dinner, the host or hostess has to be complemented, never mind if you did not enjoy.
