Getting An Upright Freezer? Here's What You Need Know

By John Brown

Most families use refrigerators with built in freezers. While these may provide a small family with enough frozen food storage space, larger families have found that having an upright freezer is much more convenient. The extra freezing capacity lets them buy foods on sale in bulk. They often buy large amounts of meat when they find it on sale and they also freeze their seasonal fruits and bakery items.

The question is what type of upright freezer is right for your family? Each type of freezer has certain advantages and some have disadvantages. When shopping for a freezer you need to look at price, energy efficiency and freezing capacity. Some freezers come with self-defrost features, but not all. Upright freezers traditionally come in sizes ranging between 2 cubit feet and 25 cubit feet. Generally the big box stores carry mid-size freezers from the most popular manufacturers. These are normally in the middle price range.

Buying a freezer for your home will bring about many benefits. There is no wonder why some people prefer to have a freezer separate from their refrigerator. Having 2 separate devices allows for more storage space as your frozen foods can be kept in a separate location. It may be more expensive to have two machines but the convenience of having more storage space is worth the money.

The majority of people these days prefer the upright freezer rather than the chest freezer, despite 15% lower capacity. These units are priced according to the style, total storage space in cubit feet as well as extra features like automatic or manual defrosting.

It may be hard to distinguish between the freezers that can auto defrost and the ones that cannot so it is advisable to ask the vendor or check up on upright freezer reviews about this. The additional fees is usually $100 or even more but most people concur that it is worth the cost. Self defrosting freezers stop ice from building up and ruining your food. However, this will also increase your electricity bills.

Prices for upright freezers vary by manufacturer and size. Most mainstream freezers will range in price from just under $200 for a 2.0 cu ft unit, up to $700 or more for a 25 cu ft freezer. Naturally there is a wide array of prices in between.

Upright freezers are preferable over chest type freezers because they allow for easier organization of food. It is easier to rotate the contents and to see all the food you have stored. Some units come with storage bins that can be removed for cleaning. You may also find freezers with adjustable shelves, bins and baskets. All of these features will add to the ease with which foods may be stored.

Does the addition of an upright freezer make sense for your family? Consider the cost of the unit plus the additional energy costs. On the other hand, factor in the savings you will experience by buying food in bulk. You will also enjoy having many seasonal foods available to your family all year round.
