By Chelsea Evans

Many people realize that cooking at home not only costs less than dining out, it allows for more comfort. Yet, it can be a task to season food in the same fashion as most restaurants. Anyone who is not familiar with how to use these should look into the basics. Rubs are normally dry and usually do not require a lot of time to flavor food. In fact, the flavor can be so powerful that users should be cautious about the amounts used as well as they type of meat. When pouring directly into the flesh, the more intense the flavor will be.

Many say that marinades are easier because they just require pouring directly on the meat and letting sit for a few hours. Those who use these of often suggest letting the meat soak overnight for full flavor. Thick cuts of meat benefit greatly from marinades, as they require no further seasoning. Once meat has soaked, it can be sealed and stored for an hour or more.

Flavors available on the market range from Asian flavors to hearty, smoky flavors that can only be duplicated on a grill. There is also the choice of exotic flavors that used imported spices, dried fruits and other taste combinations. Normally manufacturers list the meats that are the most compatible with the flavor.

Dense fish like salmon may benefit from a Cajun or garlic flavor. Since many fish types are light in texture as well as flavor, these should be used sparingly as it may not be necessary to soak for more than one hour. Shellfish should be given the same consideration though spicy garlic crab is a popular entree that many would like to duplicate at home.

While these are designed to save time in measuring and seasoning food, they can also provide a shortcut in other areas. They can be used to flavor some soups, side dishes, or as a quick sauce. They can also be used in vegetable dishes that are mild in flavor like mushrooms and potatoes. Even some marinades and seasonings that are created for vegetarian entrees.

The best way to choose a marinade or rub is to look at the ingredients. Many manufacturers may use terms like gourmet or premium but often they are mostly water and salt. A person can also look to see if the spices are visible or not. Even major brand names tend to skimp on ingredients so it is best to look carefully.

Though most are generally in the same price range, some say that spending a little more is worth the investment. Otherwise, a person might as well season their food with salt and pepper. Using gourmet marinades and rubs can be fun and are ideal for the person that has little time to spend in the kitchen.
