Ways To Clean Your Freezer After Losing Power

By John Brown

Power outages often happen during the summer when the use of air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers are especially high, meaning the possibility of a door being accidentally left open or ajar is also higher. The mess that develops is no fun to clean!

A fairly usual consequence of leaving even the best fridge freezer door open is the stench of food going bad. If you left the freezer door open for too long, what will happen is that the warm air will defrost your frozen foods, like your fish and meats, and by the time you realise the door is open, the food will be ruined as well as the scent of the room. Sound familiar? To address this issue, just follow these easy steps below to help get your fridge or freezer smelling the way it should be again.

1. Firstly, remove all the moveable components of the freezer or fridge. Doors, shelves, drawers should all be taken out. Clean these with soapy warm water. Wipe clean the fridge's other inner parts, being extra careful with the door liner and gaskets. Rinse and leave dry all the pieces as well.

2. Use a baking soda solution to clean the insides of the fridge. To make this solution, just mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with four cups, or 1 litre, of water.

3. In addition to baking soda, activated charcoal also works wonders for removing residual fridge or freezer odors. To activate charcoal, place some of it onto a large flat pan and heat it up. Then place this into the fridge or freezer for the charcoal to absorb the excess smells. Also keep in mind to remove all things inside the freezer and run it on the highest setting possible for a few days or until the smell is gone.

4. Newspaper can also be used to absorb the odors. Simply crumple the papers up and pack them into the shelves of the fridge or freezer. Place a cup or water or sprinkle some of the water onto the newspaper itself. This will help add moisture and increase absorption of the smell. Then turn up the freezer to the greatest setting possible. This will, on average, take between five to six days.

5. Place freshly ground coffee in small containers in the freezer, turn the freezer temperature down to the lowest temperature possible and run it like that for at least a few days.

If you've done all of the above things yet the smell of spoiled meat remains, there is a possibility that the drippings of the meat have leaked into the insulation and gaskets of the machine. In that case, call a fridge technician to help you replace these components.
