The Kosher MRE Finally Available

By Vicki Diaz

The United States military of today is vastly different than what it was 40 years ago. As a matter of fact it is vastly different than what it was even 10 years ago. It is a more diverse military. Changing of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" rule and fighting to bring women to combat are all examples of this. Even now with a understanding of the various religions it makes sense to even make sure that the troops have a Kosher MRE available should they want it.

In 1991 during the start of the first Iraq war a company called My Own Meals started to produce a Kosher MRE for troops fighting in that theater and provided them to the military. After the war ended however so did the contract to provide these types of meals so troops were back to the standard MRE.

That would not be the end of this fight for the company CEO however. She brought the case to the Pentagon and for five long years she fought to get the program back in place. She felt very strongly that soldiers of those religious beliefs should have the opportunity to keep up with their religious duties.

It was in 1991 that a company that was producing shelf stable children's meals agreed to switch production over to producing the Kosher MRE for Jewish and Muslim troops serving in the first Iraqi war. All of those troops owe the CEO of that company a debt of gratitude because before that happened the United States military did not provide such a thing.

Anywhere there was a direct need for food that didn't need an oven or even a fire to cook, the MRE was available and able to be of help to the people. The people living in the areas affected by natural disasters or other such emergency situations were very grateful for what the MRE provided for them in a time of great need.

The fact that a Kosher MRE is now available for anybody who needs one is a big deal. There are a lot of people who Jewish or Muslim faith who in a time of emergency might not otherwise have a choice but to eat normal food and go against their faith. Now they do not need to do such a thing and they can maintain their faith and request a kosher meal.

These meals are much more than they used to be. Back as far as the Vietnam War the meals the soldiers received were packaged as a dehydrated main course and side dishes that either came in a small can or another dehydrated package. No one really enjoyed them and they only ate them because without some sustenance they would not survive.

The Kosher MRE has made it much easier for many soldiers to uphold the rules of their religion and keep them from breaking their faith on a daily basis. Something like this could become a source of great stress and frustration for some people even though it is beyond their control. Now however it is no longer an issue and those troops could not be happier. Thanks to a small company in Illinois.
