Choosing The Right Amount Of Wine For A Special Occasion

By David Dienger

When it is time to celebrate many people want to include alcoholic drinks. Whether celebrating a milestone in one's own life or that of someone else, a party may be at hand. Many party planners who do well with every other aspect of the celebration often fail at choosing the right amount of wine for a special occasion.

All kinds of parties may call for spirits. Some of the more common one may be asked about include an office retirement party and a wedding. While these two represent different ends of life, the method to choose remains the same.

How much to buy?

This is easier to calculate using ratios. For example, each bottle will yield five 5 ounce servings. While this will not fill them to the brim, it is a good, solid serving. Therefore, every 12 bottles provides about 60 glasses. With 30 in attendance, this calculates to 2 glasses for each individuals, a good number for an hour in a business setting. In social settings the number may need to bumped to three drinks per person per hour. In addition, plan to have more than will actually be used.

Consider the Ratio of Whites to Reds?

For years, event planners have used a 1:2 ratio of whites to reds. However, as people are moving to the lighter whites, it does not hurt to up the ration to 2:3 bottles. In addition, individuals who know their guests can also change this ratio as needed to meet the requirements of the guests.

Budget Considerations

Less expensive wines come from countries such as Portugal, Spain, Southern France and sometimes Chile. Better wines are more expensive to make so they do cost more. For the office party choose something that is easy going and comfortable. For a big social event the selection may need to pair with the food. Attempt to balance costs here. Do not plan to spend $2 per person on drinks when serving a $50 meal.

What About Liquor Permits?

If alcohol is consumed outside of a licensed establishment or personal residence, a temporary license is required. Most good liquor stores offer them at $12 if the liquor is being given away or free and $27 for resale. This ensures that the liquor inspector cannot shut down the party, confiscate the drinks and fine the organizer.

Most connoisseurs keep a bottle around the home waiting for release. It is a good idea to purchase an occasional case to be used in everyday events. This ensures there is plenty to host an impromptu event at home or take a bottle to a friend. If wanting to build a cellar, replace each bottle use with two.

The top hint for choosing the right amount of wine for a special occasion is to use ratios. By comparing the number of guests, time the celebration will run and number of drinks per bottle and per hour, the calculation is simple. This will ensure you do not run short.

Here's to you.
